Improve Air Quality in Your Home

With the Fall season upon us and Winter close behind, we’ll all be spending a lot more time indoors and there are common air pollutants in your home that can lower the quality of the air that you and your family breathe. Here are some great tips to help reduce pollutants and improve the air quality in your home:

• Routine house cleanings can help reduce dust mites, pollen, & pet dander. On dry days, especially this time of year, open the windows and air out the house. This will help reduce the concentration of pollutants in the air.
• Prevent moisture from collecting in the kitchen, laundry room & bathroom by using exhaust fans. Keep your stove & oven properly ventilated by making sure that vents are not obstructed. Also remember to change you Air Conditioner’s Air Filter on a regular basis. This also helps with your energy bills by reducing the stress on your air conditioner.
• You can also use plants to remove indoor pollutants and add oxygen to the air. Many plants, such as palms, ferns, peace lilies, spider plants, rubber plants, chrysanthemums, ivy, and dracaena are natural air purifiers and they’ll also add color & depth to any room you put them in.
• Avoid mixing household cleaners, as they may be harmful if inhaled. Also, consider using non-toxic, natural products, such as baking soda, lemon juice, vinegar, and borax to clean, to avoid harmful fumes in the air.
• Send all smokers outdoors and try to limit the use of wax candles, incense, and other products that produce soot. Gel candles are a great way to do this, as they do not produce soot and they also burn longer, stronger, and cleaner than wax candles. Just be sure that the container you buy the gel candle in is, in fact, heat safe and keep the gel candle away from pets & children, as they also burn hotter than a regular wax candle.
• Choose Water-Based paints for your interior, which have low VOC (the same chemical found in gasoline and nail polish).
